5 Top March Projects

Project Header March

There is so much going on right now, I thought it would be a good idea to do a blog post on some of the projects I am working on. At a later point, I’ll do another one with updates, so that you can all join in on the progress. Don’t forget to book for the Creative Workshop in April. Also I’ll be making an appearance at The Deer Little Market (details below).

1. Katya Cat at The Deer Little Market – 20th of March 2016

Deer Market IllustrationAuthor, Julia Richman, of Katya Cat – The Bacon Chase, and I will be reading and illustrating at The Deer Little Market on Sunday the 20th March, at 2 Deer Park Drive, adjacent to Deerpark Cafe, Vredehoek, Cape Town. The market is open at 9am to 1pm. I will have to get back to you when Julia and I are presenting. There will be stalls and entertainment for little ones, as well as a magic show later in the day, so make a note in your calendar. Julia will be reading a few chapters while I illustrate the characters and we shall be handing out simple drawings for all little ones to colour in as well. There will be copies of Katya Cat for sale.

2. Creative Workshop – 3rd of April 2016

Creative WorkshopOnly a month away till the first Creative Workshop! For the month of April, we will be doing a few creative warm-ups in the morning, then break for tea and afterwards we are going to be making dream-catchers out of willow, ribbon, twine, beads and feathers. All art material is supplied (unless you really want to bring your favorite pen or something). Come and join us and bring a friend if you like. If you would like more information, you can see the Creative Workshop page, or alternatively, drop me an email at mrsbeckelring@gmail.com

3. Book Dash – Penguin Palace

Book Dash ProgressFor those who missed it, Book Dash was last weekend. I am currently working on one of their books, called Penguin Palace. All the sketches have been done and I will be spending the next two weeks (depending on how it goes) doing final sketches. So far I think it’s looking good!

4. Stars the Shelter Cat By Holly

Stars Illustration
I am currently working on Stars, the Shelter Cat, by Holly Magnani, from Columbus, Ohio, USA. Holly has several cats and has written beautiful stories about them. Her first book is going to be about Stars, who is lactose intolerant. Here are a few characters sketches I have drawn so far, for this project, as well as Stars himself.

5. Art Teddy Bear

Art Doll

There have been some amazing Art Dolls, going around the internet and so I though I would try my hand at them. To start with, I thought I would try a simple bear-like creature. I discovered I already had my first error, when I designed the paws, I used the original ‘bear’ sewing template, and not the correct template which was 50% smaller. I shall, as a result, be doing a little magic with some paint to fix the error. I decided that since this was the first one, I was allowed to get away with a little paint magic for now. The most important thing is to get used to the whole thing, learn from the mistakes and then let my creative juices flow. As you can see from the image above, I’ve already done the head (and paws) in polymer clay. I went to Fabric World (Wynberg) to fetch my materials and this weekend I shall start to put the whole thing together, as well as paint the polymer clay. Very excited!
